What is Ramayana Masam?
Malayalam Month "Karkitakam" is considered as Ramayana Masam. It is during mid July to mid August. During this month the monsoon rains in Kerala are very heavy. Years ago this month was considered as a bad month due to poverty and illness. Due to the rain and floods crop yeilds were alomost nil. In order to protect from this bad time, people used to read Ramayana in thier house and temples. Marriages, house warmings and all other auspicious functions are not held in this month.
